ABARES recently published its latest winter crop forecast; reducing its September barley production forecast by…
ABARES Australian Crop Report for June 2023 has plantings for Winter Crop 23/24 at historically high levels but forecast production of all crops including barley to decline by 1/3 year on year in response to predicted El Nino/+IOD conditions developing in Spring.
Most States have similar barley yields and by virtue of area planted, Western Australia production is forecast to be more than double that of South Australia, Victoria and NSW. Queensland and Tasmania are small producers by comparison but are important locally and Queensland can influence Eastern markets if shorts need to be filled from the SE States
With ideal conditions prevailing in most parts of Australia, an early barley S&D suggests Australia will have adequate domestic cover plus an exportable surplus of 4mmt in the 23/24 shipping window.
