The world’s largest maltster is exhibiting determination despite a third year of declining global beer consumption. Offsetting their recent moves to reduce or close production capacity in Germany and the UK, the company has announced two greenfield projects in South Africa and India and a capacity expansion in Scotland since late 2024.

The 100kmt malthouse planned for Johannesberg reflects a strategic relationship with Heineken. The Indian malthouse located at Rajasthan will add 110kmt to accommodate a significant increase in Indian beer consumption. Their plan to increase capacity at their Inverness plant by 57kmt considers overall regional rationalization.

These moves illustrate how the industry is adapting to regional changes in demand.
